Rachel Craig, M.Ed., LPC
Swaddled Birth Photography includes birth photography taken during your labor and delivery experience as well as 1-2 hours post delivery to capture as many images of the baby’s first life moments for you.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Birth Doula.
I am available for as many email/telephone consultations as you’d like, and I’d like to meet with you and your partner for a minimum of three times before delivery. The first meeting is considered our initial meeting in which I like to go through my contract with you and share with you what Swaddled Birth Services has to offer you. In this first meeting, I also like to get some information from you including your due date, your needs, your expectations of a birth doula and birth photographer, and answer any questions you may have about my services. This meeting is free of cost and does not obligate you to utilizing Swaddled Birth Services. I reserve the right to refer you to other doulas or mental health professionals in our area if I feel that I am unable to meet your needs and if I think it is best for you and your baby.
If you decide to utilize my services, we will meet again, and it will be considered our second meeting. This contract will be due along with the deposit. We will also discuss ideas to create a birth plan as well as discuss any previous traumatic events such as previous pregnancies or childbirth or previous sexual trauma that may affect this pregnancy, labor, delivery, or bonding period. I will want to know your own best ways of coping with stress and fatigue and how you and your partner foresee us working together. I will also inform you of times when I am unavailable for labor support. I will ask you to call or email me after each of your appointments with your doctor or midwife to keep me informed about your pregnancy and baby.
In our third meeting, we will go over positions and techniques that we will use during labor. We will also talk about any questions you still have and any concerns about your delivery experience. If you need to meet more than these three times, I am happy to do so.
During labor and delivery, I accompany you to help develop a safe and satisfying birth experience without any medical advice or medical interventions as my help is non-medical. I believe that birth is an empowering, profound, marvelous, sacred, life-changing experience. I offer sensitivity, stamina, patience and reverence to your birth process. I will provide information to enable you to make informed choices. I will maintain complete confidentiality of all details relating to your pregnancy and birth. As I am independent and self-employed, I will be working for you, not your care provider or hospital. I am there to provide on-going, nurturing, emotional and spiritual care and provide physical comfort measures to you during your birth experience. I can provide reassurance and perspective to you, make suggestions to help, and help with relaxation, massage, distraction, position and other techniques for comfort.
I can help your partner to feel calm and informed, giving him ideas to continue support from beginning to end. At no time will I “take over” or deliberately exclude your partner. I am there to provide support to both of you at all times.
I prefer that you call me when you think you are in labor, even if you do not yet need me. I can try to answer questions and make suggestions over the phone. Calling me is not a replacement for calling your physician or mid-wife.
When we speak, we will decide if I should come to you right then or wait for further change. I prefer for you to be in active labor before I come to meet you. I may need one to three hours to get to you from the time you ask me to come. We will also decide where to meet – at your home or the hospital/birth center. Except in extraordinary circumstances, I will remain with you throughout your active labor and birth.
I usually remain with you for an hour or two after birth, until you are comfortable and your family is ready for quiet time together. I can also help with initial breastfeeding. However, the hospitals in our area do have breastfeeding support if you need more than I can offer. After delivery, I like to come back for a post partum visit in the hospital. At that time, I will show you how to swaddle your baby, gift you with a swaddling blanket, and sing a blessing over your baby (thus the name Swaddled Birth Services). We will meet at least one, possibly two more times after the birth to process the birth. If continued counseling is needed, you will be given a referral form with at least three other mental health professionals in your area to choose from.
